A Home Finder view – City Status for Chelmsford
There are currently 66 cities in the UK. City status is rarely granted with only 14 new ones created during the 20th century, so the recent announcement of Chelmsford’s City status as part of the Queens Diamond Jubilee came as great news to local residents. Home Finder Timothy comments “Chelmsford is one of the fastest growing towns in the South East of England and one of the main catalysts is education. It boasts two of the best Grammar schools in England, King Edward VI and County High School for Girls.
Furthermore it has a good railway service into London with a journey time of less than 40 minutes”. But if the thought of a twice daily ‘leaves on the line’ experience is enough to put you off, there’s plenty of gainful employment to be had locally from companies such as Britvic and BAE Systems and anumber of key players in the financial industry.
But what will this new status bring to Chelmsford?
Its new status will help increase the public’s awareness of Chelmsford and reinforce the message that the area is a safe haven for business and will help attract inward investment. This in turn will attract people from out of the area who are looking to move to a City.
But what are the prime residential areas in and around Chelmsford to look out for?
If you are looking to remain around central Chelmsford there can be few nicer places than Old Moulsham, which is a popular enclave of period properties and executive townhouses. With its close proximity to the train station, it is a popular choice for commuters, a factor which certainly doesn’t damper house prices. If you are looking further afield, Chelmsford is surrounded by a number of picturesque villages and more than 1,500 acres of open space.
Timothy, Home Finder for Garrington in the South East adds “Quintessential and sought-after villages include Writtle, Danbury and Stock which are surrounded by open countryside and farmland, yet have a real sense of community spirit. Property styles vary from picture-postcard cottages with thatched roofs to luxurious new build developments”.
With both London and the countryside on its doorstep, Chelmsford caters for the City dweller and country lover, making it a convenient location and allowing its residents to get the best of both worlds.
